You’re going where?

Maine.

I’m going to Solon, Maine to work on a farm!

As interested as I’ve been in environmental issues, it seems that I’m constantly overwhelmed by the massive implications of that term. I would like to say that I’m educated and aware, especially concerning issues involving the environment, but its broadness has made that tough and discouraging!

Food issues have been one area of interest and I’ve been reading a lot about them throughout last semester and this summer. Last night, some friends and I went to see the documentary Food Inc. (which I would recommend), which sparked my interest due to its portrayal of the inadequacies and indecencies of our food system… which is something that affects ALL of us three plus times a day. The books I’ve been reading and this movie have shown me not only how our food choices are a vote for or against the system, but also the difficulty that is involved with attempting to escape the disgusting, polluting status quo.

This is vague, but I am hesitant to explain it further because I know there are many others who, currently, can do so better than I.

If you are interested in learning more, I recommend The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food, and various essays by Michael Pollan (the links page on his site is also great), Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser and the food articles on the blog, Grist. I think those are a great place to start.

Anyway, it took me a long time to understand that I cannot change the world. I have to narrow my focus and muster up my optimism! In doing so, I have found that choosing one area to investigate, whether you consider yourself an environmentalist or not, can be greatly rewarding, eye-opening and terrifying. Er, I mean motivating.

Some ideas may be:

How were your clothes made? Who made them? Where? What materials were used and where were those gathered?

What areas of your life could you cut back and simplify?

What appliances in your house are the most eco-friendly and eco-bullying?

What is your school or work place’s policy or goal for reducing their footprint? What could you do to help?

I’m getting off-topic now, but the point of this post is to say

1. I am going to a farm

2. I am going there so that I can start to actually know what I’m taking about, live closely to the land, be surrounded by like-minded people, and escape the mufflers, horns, airplanes, and all city garble, by myself, for the first time.

3. I will (HOPEFULLY) blog about my experiences while I am there. (Depending on the internet situation)

4. My challenge to you is to pick ONE area and investigate! (And then tell me all about it!)

    Hi Jenny! I saw this in my news feed on facebook. Very good! I took a class called “The Biology, Psychology, and Politics of Food” last fall term. It was with Kelly Brownell who is a leading food academic I guess you would call him. I had to read those Pollan books for the class among some other interesting projects and I wrote an OPED on beef consumption. He wrote the book FOOD FIGHT – I would recommend it if you haven’t read it yet… anyway, just thought I’d share my interest. I am also thinking about going to WOOF (working on organic farms) at some point … okay, well best of luck with everything and take care! Next time I’m in MN (have no idea!) I’ll try to get in touch. -Bouch
